Project: West Madison Street Lighting Improvement Designer:
Michael N. Maltezos Company: Maltezos & Associates Lighting Design
Madison Street is a primary gateway to the famed
“Loop” in downtown Chicago. This three-mile lighting improvement replaces conventional street lighting with a new ornamental
street lighting system. The new system uses taller fluted poles (30’) with teardrop luminaires for roadway lighting, and shorter
fluted poles (14’) with acorn luminaires (spaced between taller poles) for pedestrian illumination. The system focuses on
historic aesthetics to match the surrounding buildings’ architecture, while utilizing energy-efficient and maintainable technical
features.

Slide #1 - Madison Street’s new lighting system is designed
to: minimize light pole spacing, and reduce installation/energy costs, yet still meet IES/City recommendations; be easily
maintainable by City forces; and perform long/well in Chicago’s harsh environment.

Slide #2 - Luminaire globes were prismatic, UV-resistant, high-impact
DR acrylic to improve durability, photometric performance and glare control. HPS lamps were specified for their longer lamp-life
and color compatibility with existing installations on cross-streets.

Slide #3 - The installation, completed in March 2004, fulfills
all project requirements. The new system meets/exceeds ANSI/IESNA RP-8-00 recommendations for illuminance and pavement luminance
(including veiling luminance) on a Collector Street with High Pedestrian Conflicts. 250W HPS teardrop fixtures (Type M-C-III)
were installed on the 30’ poles in an opposite layout, 120’ OC, to meet lighting critieria given the many lanes of traffic.
100W HPS acorn fixtures (Type S-C-V) were installed on the 14’ poles, opposite and 120’ OC, to meet pedestrian lighting criteria.
House-side shields were installed on all fixtures to minimize discomfort glare onto adjacent buildings.
